Twilight Sedation

What is Twilight Sedation?

Twilight sedation is a safe and effective way to help you feel calm and comfortable during dental treatment. Also known as IV sedation, it places you in a relaxed, dream-like state while you remain awake and responsive.

IV sedation is suitable for most patients. Before treatment, your seditionist will review your medical history and discuss any health concerns to ensure sedation is safe and tailored to you.
Sedation reduces anxiety, discomfort, and awareness of the procedure. You’ll feel relaxed and drowsy, with little concern for sounds, sensations, or instruments. It’s also helpful for patients with a strong gag reflex. You are not fully unconscious, though some awareness may remain.
Medication is delivered through a vein in your arm. You’ll gradually relax into a calm, comfortable state while being closely monitored throughout the procedure.

After treatment, you’ll wake up gradually and rest briefly before being escorted home. Although you may feel alert, the medication takes time to fully wear off. You’ll need to rest at home for the remainder of the day.

Common Side Effects (Risks are 1 in 5 to 1 in 100)
• Bruising at the needle site, nausea, dizziness, shivering, headache and awareness.

Uncommon Side Effects (Risks are 1 in 100 to 1 in 5000)
• Vomiting, hiccups, injury to lips or teeth.

Rare Side Effects (Risks are 1 in 5000 to 1 in 150,000)
• Allergic reactions, aspiration (inhaling foreign material into the lungs).

The above lists do not cover every possible event that may occur during your anaesthetic. Your sedationist will see you before your procedure. Please take the opportunity to discuss your anaesthetic and any concerns you may have with them.

  • Patients who undergo twilight sedation are not permitted to leave the clinic unaccompanied following their appointment. Please arrange for someone to take you home.
